Promoting alternatives to PRN medicines in secure inpatient mental health services

The use of ‘pro re nata’ (PRN) or ‘as required’ medicines is widespread in inpatient mental health services, often as a first-line intervention when patients are experiencing challenging strong emotions, despite recommendations that non-pharmacological interventions should be attempted first. Research suggests there little evidence to support the PRN medicine regimens and practice appears based on clinical experience habit rather than evidence.This article describes quality improvement project – known ‘Pause, Reflect, Next steps’ campaign which was designed explore alternatives psychotropic for low medium secure wards. explains how information about commonly used medicines, visual map guide nurses’ patients’ decision-making assisted reducing participating This reduction correlated with an increase methods issues.
